Malan Rietveld

Malan Rietveld, PhD is an advisor to several sovereign wealth funds and their host governments. He also advises public pensions and private-sector asset managers, and regularly contributes to academic and policy research on topics of institutional investment management, governance and macroeconomics. Dr. Rietveld has consulted to a variety of organizations, including the Asian Development Bank, Australian Superannuation Fund, the Botswana Pula Fund, the Ministries of Finance and Mining in Mongolia, the Alaska Permanent Fund in the United States, FirstState Superannuation Fund in Australia and OPTrust in Canada. He previously served as Director of the Investec Institute, a client research team of Investec Asset Management, where he was responsible for macroeconomic and political research.

Dr. Rietveld holds an M.Sc in Economics from the University of Leuven, and M.Sc in Economic History from the London School of Economics, and a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Stellenbosch. He also completed the Investment Management Theory and Practice program at the Yale School of Management. Dr. Rietveld has been a Fellow of Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for International Development and the Center for Sustainable Investment at Columbia University, and currently serves a Research Fellow of the Department of Economics at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.
